Lessons from my 2,573km road trip
This past weekend, I drove from Windsor, Ontario to Saskatoon, Sask.
It was a realllllllly long road trip - the longest I’ve ever taken… 2,573km to be exact.
And I’ll be the first to admit there was basically no pre-planning done for this trip. As in:
No hotels were booked.
A rough travel schedule had been discussed but not confirmed (nights in Chicago, Minneapolis and Minot).
A few short prayers were said - mostly by my mom - regarding road conditions.
And you know what? It actually went pretty well.
The main hiccup was a late-night drive through soupy fog around Carrington, North Dakota, but other than that, things went off without a hitch.
Why am I sharing this riveting story with you, friend??
Well, sometimes in business, I think it’s easy to get stuck in the planning stage of things:
You want your agents (aka technical team members) to go from an average of 54 transactions per year to 75, but you’re spinning your wheels on how to inspire them to do this;
You make a really nice list of goals for 2024 and then struggle to find time to actually put in the work to reach the goals; and
You’ve been brainstorming a way to create passive income or income that requires less of your time for what feels like forever but have made $0 this way.
In short, you’re stuck in analysis paralysis.
And what I want to share with you today is that some of the best advice I ever received:
When you get an idea (aka a love note from the Uni), do something to move it forward in the next 10 seconds.
That’s right. Act fast and magic will happen.
Now, I will be the first to admit that acting fast does not work in every single situation - especially when the consequences of the wrong actions are irreversible (and tbh, a bit more pre-planning for my little road trip probably wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world).
However, having a bias towards aligned action accompanied by the **appropriate** amount of planning will lead to fantastic results like:
More revenue per technical team member when you vulnerably share that you have big dreams for the team and want to get their thoughts on how best to accomplish these dreams (#engagement)
Goals that you stop carrying forward because they've gone from “on the list” to the “done like dinner” list, and
Passive income sources that allow you to make money while you sleep (yes, this is a real thing. I do it and you can too).
