Struggling with Hiring? Let’s Fix That.

Hi friends!

Today we are digging into another topic that my team and I love to help my clients with (because we do a lot more than financial analysis over here): hiring great people.

We are also going to introduce you to something exciting we have been working on over here…

But first…

Have you ever hired someone and they just didn’t work out?

➡️ Maybe their skill set wasn't a match for the position so you ended up working more once this person was hired (not less)..

➡️ Or they were woefully inexperienced when it came to the tech stack used by your team..

➡️ Or maybe they just couldn’t tackle all the tasks that occurred in their role on a daily basis (aka felt overwhelmed by the position)

Whatever the reason - most small business owners have been there, First name / friend(including moi).

Not only are hiring mistakes frustrating, it’s they are also costly and you know I have my eyes on your bottom line.

The wrong candidate means wasted time, energy, $$… and can even have an impact on your existing team members.

Fortunately, my team and I have developed a set of templates to help increase your chances of success in the world of hiring.  The concepts and ideas inside these templates have been used to help dozens of owners “right-size” their team (i.e. match team size and productivity up with desired revenue levels).

Today, I want to talk about one of these templates that I feel is a bit magical lol. I’ve seen the success it’s created first-hand with so many of my consulting clients. I want to share it with you because, even if you don’t join me inside +the Formula+, it feels aligned for me to spread the word a bit here.

(and if you already have a team or team member that is performing so-so, keep reading.  The questions are extremely useful for helping existing team members clarify their roles too)

One of the key steps in our hiring process is drafting a Role Functions doc.

And for the first time ever, I’m sharing the questions we address in this doc when we work with 1:1 clients:

  1. What is the job purpose, job goals and reporting structure?

  2. What are the key skills required for a candidate in this position to succeed?

  3. What key tasks will this role complete daily, weekly, monthly, and annually?

  4. Who will be the main collaborators?

  5. What regular meetings will this person attend?  Will they own the meeting?

  6. What is the tech stack (software/systems) used by this person?

Now, friend, the magic is not in reading these questions.

The magic is in answering them because what does this long list of questions ensure - well - for one, it guarantees you won’t rush the hiring process.

So, your homework: before you post that ad to Indeed, I’d recommend taking 2ish hours with your fav cup of tea and digging deep to answer these six questions.

✅ Yes, even if you’re “just” hiring a VA.

✅ Yes, even if you’re 10000% sure your cousin’s brother’s friend will be a perfect fit for a new bookkeeper.
